Marc Lamont Walker Jr. was born on November 24, 1996, at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland, to Phyllis Cheek-Walker and the late Marc Lamont Walker Sr.
Marc was raised in District Heights, Maryland, alongside his mother and younger brother, Miles. He attended Nannie Helen Burroughs Elementary School and Ascension Lutheran Middle School before graduating from DeMatha Catholic High School. While growing up, Marc stayed active through various sports such as baseball, basketball, tennis, soccer, and swimming. His love for the water led him to the Theresa Banks Swim Team. Marc worked as a lifeguard, where his discipline, responsibility, and commitment to helping others first became evident.
Marc was a lifelong member of Mt. Jezreel Baptist Church where he was baptized by his great-uncle, Pastor Emeritus Eldridge Spearman. He was active in Sunday School, served as an usher, sang in the youth choir, and participated in the boys' mentoring ministry. Marc also served as a servant-leader intern with the Freedom School.
After high school, Marc attended his great-grandfather's alma mater, Benedict College, a historically Black college in Columbia, South Carolina. He graduated in 2019 with a degree in Child and Family Development before moving to Boston, Massachusetts, to pursue his calling of serving children and families. Throughout his career, Marc provided unwavering guidance and support to youth. He worked as an Early Childhood Educator with the Martin Trust Partnership in Education for Early Learners. He later served as a CBHI Therapeutic Mentor at the Italian Home for Children.
In August 2023, Marc returned to Maryland and continued his career as a Crisis Counselor at Safe Journey House. There, he supported individuals experiencing mental health crises, helping them find stability, hope, and the resources they needed to move forward. Throughout his professional journey, Marc was known for his patience, kindness, leadership, and commitment to serving others. He approached every role with profound compassion and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of those in need.
The qualities that made Marc an effective counselor, his warmth, empathy, and genuine interest in people, were just as evident in his everyday life. Marc never met a stranger. Whether standing in line, walking into a room, or meeting someone for the first time, he had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. His outgoing personality, quick wit, and easy charm often turned brief conversations into lasting friendships.
Those closest to Marc experienced these beautiful qualities every day. To his younger brother, Miles, Marc was more than a brother; he was a best friend, a protector, and a constant source of support. Marc and Miles shared an unbreakable bond, celebrating life's successes, facing challenges together, and creating lasting memories with family, especially during weekends, holidays, and trips with their grandparents, Barbara and the late William Cheek, Sr.
Marc and Miles were also blessed with a second family who loved them as their own. Their godmother, Kimberly Miles, along with their bonus grandparents, Gladys “Ma” Miles and the late Calvin “Da” Miles, picked them up from school every Tuesday, took them to dinner, and faithfully showed up for every life event along the way.
Marc also shared a special bond with his Uncle Jay. They loved spending time together, talking, joking, and enjoying each other's company. As an older cousin to Kayla, Zoey, Zion, and Jarrad, Marc cherished every moment spent with them; whether playing games, making them smile, or cheering them on, he made each of them feel seen, valued, and loved.
Marc's diverse interests reflected his curiosity and enthusiasm for life. He deeply enjoyed music and rarely missed an opportunity to attend a concert, especially when his brother, Miles, was behind the DJ booth. He was also an avid gamer and was deeply passionate about Japanese anime culture, building a manga collection, attending conventions, and connecting with a vibrant community of fellow enthusiasts. Saturday pool games with his Uncle William were among his favorite traditions.
Marc also appreciated the simple moments that brought him serenity. He found peace in longboarding, playing chess, taking long drives in his Ford Mustang, and spending quiet evenings stargazing from the back deck. His faith remained the foundation of his life, guiding him each day. One of the relationships he treasured most was with his grandmother, Barbara Cheek; before every major decision or new chapter, Marc would ask her to pray with him, deeply valuing her wisdom, encouragement, and unwavering faith.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted mother, Phyllis Cheek-Walker; his siblings, Miles Walker, Marc Childs, Markisha Streeter and Maria Streeter; his girlfriend, Rose Fuentes; his grandmothers, Barbara Cheek and Diane Walker; his grandfather, Myron Thomas;
his uncles, William Cheek (Sherica) and John Cheek (Krisy); his aunt, Kimberly Farrow; his godmother, Kimberly Miles; and his cousin, Obawole. He shared a tender bond with Francine Tyler, Gladys “Ma” Miles, and Calvin “Da” Miles; his great-aunts Agnes Foushee, Margie Casey, and Jacquelyn Spearman; and his great-uncle, Eldridge Spearman.
A vast community of cousins, extended relatives, and beloved friends will forever hold his memory close.
